If you have ever thought about going green and installing DIY solar panels, you may want to know exactly how it works in order to make your final decision. Many people mistakenly believe that solar energy is only when the sun is shining directly on to the surface of the solar panels or solar cells. Such is not the case. While solar energy may not be the most efficient alternative power source, it is certainly one of the most renewable. As solar energy technology increases, it is also becoming one of the more affordable energy alternatives.

Most people are going to know what solar panels are but even these are rapidly changing. In the early days of solar energy, solar panels were often large, cumbersome and usually very fragile as well. This is because there had to be room for the solar cells, (sometimes called photovoltaic cells) water, the glass (and fragile) top to allow the sun to shine through and a casing large enough to house all of this material.

These days there are thin-film solar panels that can literally be rolled up like a map. There are solar panels that are virtually unmistakable from other roofing materials and would fit nicely in even the most prestigious residential neighborhoods and there are many other advantages with modern solar energy technology that were not readily available until recently.

One of the biggest drawbacks of solar energy is the batteries that were required to store the energy. These days, that process of storing energy from solar power is all but over for new systems. The solar panels collect the solar radiation and a DC (direct current) charge is created. That electrical charge is then run through an inverter and converted into AC power. The AC power which is created by the power inverter is then integrated into the other power coming into your home from the power lines and ultimately, from your local utility company.

There is no need to purchase costly, toxic and environmentally questionable battery racks in order to store all of the energy that you have created. In fact, if you are able to utilize today's solar energy technology to its fullest capabilities, you can actually create enough power to power your entire home. If you create more energy than you use, the energy company (the Utility Company) has no choice but to actually compensate you for the excess energy that you produced. In other words, you can actually get paid for saving money.

While the process of building DIY solar panels used to be very expensive and ineffective, these days, the technology that is available is much better, more inexpensive and much more efficient. The DoE or Department of Energy is working with private corporations and even smaller companies on a regular basis to increase the ability to utilize solar energy in an increasingly safe, environmentally friendly and efficient manner. From time to time, it is even possible to discover government grants that are available for the exploration of new solar energy techniques so if you have an idea, it may be worth looking into solar energy as more than just an alternative energy source.
