DIY Home solar panels- testing out solar charge controller
Here I test out some old, unwanted Sealed Lead Acid batteries, courtesy of my friend Jordan, as well as the Solar Charge Controller that I got off eBay. But I have yet to solder my Solar cells together yet, so here I’m trying to MacGyver a way to charge up the SLA batteries to see if they are still functioning. I replaced the solar panel input with some rechargeable batteries that totalled ~12V with a 300ohm resistor, and surprisingly it works!!
Stay tuned for more updates.
DIY – Home Solar Power Part #4 “Safety First Update”
Just an update to show that even though it’s good to have a solar backup system, it can also be dangerous if adequate safeguards are not in place. I’m on my 3rd inverter after my 2000 Watt (Continuous) Pure Sine wave inverter “burned” out on me when I plugged in a 1600 Watt household iron (it was the Shark brand iron). I thought it was 1500 Watts when making the video. Anyway, you would think that a 2000 Watt inverter could handle it,,, well no it didn’t. It didn’t even trip the overload protection in the inverter. Just literally burned out. Link to my updated system schematic is below: dc415.4shared.com
12 volt Solar Panel set up,just the beginning.
My first attempt at making power from the sun. Seems to be going well. What we have here is a OSP 3000 watt inverter,Coleman air 440 amp -charge controller, and a 145 watt solar panel. 12 volt blue top optima battery.

Air conditioning running off solar power.
This is a small window unit Air-conditioner and its pulling power from my grid-tie inverters using that power first and getting any excess it may need from the electric grid. This is supplementing the air made by the large unit just to help in cooling.

Solar panels MPPT charge controller and 1500 watt Go power pure sine wave inverter part 6
Solar panels MPPT charge controller and 1500 watt Go power pure sine wave inverter part 6 – Here I have 750W going into the input and there is ZERO sun out so I’m lucky to be getting anything going in. I now have the 1150W of panels hooked up but the panels are all laid out on the ground while I build their mount. Next steps are to build the mount and get these panels up in the air and off the ground! I should gain a few HOURS of solar time when these are off the ground. More to follow! UPs is a term used when talking about UPS’s called a un-interruptible power supply.
