Solar-powered home-built Stirling engine

I designed my little testbed engine so it can be inverted and heated from above, and I finally got the opportunity to try it out using solar energy. I had an old Fresnel lens from a large screen TV that I mounted in a frame and then put the engine hot end at the focus. I was pleased to see that it runs very well, over 1000 rpm. Features of the engine: wood frame, ball bearing crank, water bottle cylinder, tuna can cooling jacket, inner tube and PVC power diaphragm, stainless steel wool moving regenerator. Cooling water provided by tiny submersible pump from Harbor Freight. Stay tuned – next generation engine coming soon. This one has about served its purpose.

We have 2 Evergreen Solar panels 180 watts each, Tristar 60Amp Controller, 2, 400 watt Air-x wind generators, about 8 marine deep cycle batteries from walmart now. A 250A DC breakerbox from Midnight Solar, Xantrex DR-2412 2400Watt Inverter, and a Reliance transfer switch. So far the system has cost about 00 with everything overbuilt to be upgradeable with more solar panels as soon as we get some more funding! More videos soon lots has changed since winter has set in.

When St. Christopher responded about being interested, we setup a meeting for late September 2009 and went out to view the grounds and start planning. The RFP from the State was issued in early September. The government was looking at multiple factors before approving a non-profit like St. Christopher for the grant. These included visibility of project, potential job creation, overall benefit in terms of investment and payback of the project (they needed a minimum return of .50 dollars to spent). Passive Solar Air Heater Heating System Alternative Energy
