its not cheappowerscience, its not hugeinvestmentreturnpowerscience, its greenpowerscience…..but, it seems people will always choose the smog machine over something clean because its a few dollars cheaper or its just plain easier…

Hi Dan, you mention ‘paralleling’ panels. If i was to parallel two panels with different ratings into an inverter would this cause problems? I can see that if connected in series, the panels may try to drive each other. I know ideally keep the ratings the same, but what issue would I have if I DID parallel some with different ratings?

@pna71 Just so you know, I am a daily shark of a trader in the commodities and Oil is one of them. I have no doubt peak oil production capacity along with Natural gas and coal will one day hit us…as I see that storm heading our way then solar/wind will be viable. Until then I will use the less expensive energy fossil fuels provide. I do have a full alternative energy plan in place with some of it active now like a high thermal efficiency home, lights, appliances and Hybrid auto getting 38mpg.
Fantastic vid! If the inverters get so hot, maybe you could put a stirling enginge onto them, lol. Your videos illustrate a very important point, which is that we all use energy that’s consistent, and it’s consistency that’s the problem with homebrew & renewable systems. 42v in order to only use 24 seems rather wasteful, but other solutions don’t seem to be all that forthcoming.
I have installed 10 of these on my roof. What I did was leave the backing on and used clamps to fasten them to the shingles. I love how easy it is to mount these.

Dont want to rain on your parade but your hybrid auto is a very poor return, i run a 1.6L deisel ford with tdci 109bhp engine that gives me 55-74mpg all day every day. No batteries to replace and one simple engine. The hybrid auto is a scam much like PV cells. Heat water with solar and save the rest with low power lighting and appliances.
@tongueboy500 The GTI’s MPPT feature will also help by finding the max power point of both panels, which would be a compromise between them, but if they are not too mis-matched then the difference would be minimal.
I assume that solar is best if you could stick with items that would run on 12 volt DC…12 Volt radio , microwave oven , lighting and such??? Is my thinking correct…Thanks and God bless…
@tekknorat what do games have to do with this? Games are entertainment! It’s like saying, when will the movie you went to pay off? I can sell my game after playing it for a month for almost the same price I bought it and have HOURS of fun.

If you had to use a lower voltage inverter, you could use a circuit to dump excess power into a dummy load if the voltage got too high. Essentially a zener diode and a big transistor and a load. It should be pretty inexpensive. Although it’s probably smarter to put that effort into getting the right inverter instead!

@tekknorat i agree with his comment, but solar panels have a lifespan after which you have to get new ones! So, its the same as paying the corporation, minus the convenience. The only reason you would get solar panels is if you were in a remote location, or have extra money to spend and want to go ‘green’er
@marsCubed Unions like the IWW and CNT have been arguing for ages that we can do without bosses. It’s good to see that more people are catching on to that idea.
@MARTIALLAWLESS It also gives you some freedom that the grid doesn’t offer. If there is a power outage you can still have some power. I a 50 watt panel and a small battery and charge controller. It isn’t much, but as long as there is sun it will work when the grid doesn’t. After the initial investment in hardware, I don’t have to spend any money on it. Gas powered generators are noisy and require spending money on fuel. Sun light is free. So is wind, but thats for a future project.
